About a month ago we were driving home from town at night and a few miles from our house we passed a dog alongside the road. Now this might sound like a normal occurrence to some, but the only dogs we see are in front of the 3 ranches we pass or in the back of a truck. My husband dropped us off and headed back to find her-he has a soft spot for dogs. It took about half an hour of coaxing until the beef jerky finally lured her in. She was covered in porcupine quills deeply embedded and they had been there for a while as they were scabbed over. He brought her home and put her in the stock trailer with some food and water. The next morning I removed the remaining quills and doted on her with dog treats. Her thin frame and sore paws told us she was on her own for a while now. She donned silky soft red and white crimpy hair and docked tail. We let her out to introduce herself to our pack of dogs and she was faithfully by our sides wherever we went. We made phone calls all around without any claimers. Well, feeding five dogs is hard on our budget so when the neighbors lost their only dog, we offered her to them. They were excited and met us half way. I said my goodbyes sadly and handed her over, letting them know I named her Macy although she was not fond of the name quite yet. A few weeks later when I started getting over her (I get attached to animals quickly) the phone rang. She was doing great with them but kept herding the chickens into the henhouse all day as they had no other work for her to do. So Macy was back and has been by my side ever since. With the Yellowstone river and a highway on one side and 20 miles of gravel road east and west- it seems she was traveling to find us- and what a life she now has!
